Box Score
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - The Olivet Nazarene University women's basketball team continueed their struggles as they added another defeat to their loss column with a 62-73 loss to Indiana University South Bend on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers fall to 13-10 (2-4) on the season, while the Titans improve to 11-13 (5-2).
ONU tried a new strategy this afternoon as they went to a half court offense, hoping to throw off the Titans game plan. Instead of the quick run-and-gun offense that opponents have come to expect, the Tigers slowed it down to try to look for quality shots instead of hurried treys.
The plan seemed to backfire early in the game, as IUSB jumped out to an early 9-0 lead. ONU forward Brooke Peterson (Arlington Heights, Ill.) finally put the Tigers on the board with a lay-up at the 17:06 mark. Seven minutes later, Olivet finally took the lead with a three-pointer by senior guard Jade Stanlick (Edwardsville, Ill.), beginning a 20-10 scoring run that was topped off by a buzzer beating lay-up by the Tigers' Poppy Miller (New haven, Ind.) assisted by Peterson. The score at the half found the Tigers with a nine point lead (34-25).
It took the Titans just under five minutes to tie the game at 41-41 on a solid jumper by Kimmie Hummer in the second half. The game would stay tight until IUSB would go on a 13-4 run to finish out the game.
Accurate shooting proved to be the difference as the Titans posted a 52.5% (31-59) shooting performance on the day, whereas the Tigers only shot 36.4% (24-66). ONU couldn't contain the efforts of IUSB's Katie Hacker, as she put up great numbers in the form of a double-double (25 points, 12 rebounds). Kimmie Hummer and Lizzie Stapke also chipped in 15 and 14 points respectively.
Peterson led the Tigers in points, posting 19 on 7-16 shooting, while fellow seniors Stanlick and Miller each had 10 apiece. Freshman forward, Jaimie Buckman (Morton, Ill.), had a great game defensively, grabbing 10 boards and blocking two, to add to her season total of 22 rejections.
The Tigers will take action again next Tuesday as they look to compete against the Illinois Institute of Technology. In their last meeting, the Tigers dominated IIT in a 101-47 thrashing. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
