CHICAGO, Ill. - Saint Xavier University outscored the Tigers’ women’s basketball team 29-8 in the first half's last nine minutes and never looked back, as they handed the Tigers their eighth loss of the season, winning 110-75.
The Tigers got off to a good start, staying close to the eighth nationally ranked Cougars, but soon found themselves overmatched. At the 9:26 mark, the game was tight at 22 points apiece for each squad. Jealyn Foston (Cassopolis, Mich.) hit a jumper, putting the Tigers ahead by two. But that was the last lead ONU would see as a three-pointer by SXU's Erin Hannemann would put the Cougars ahead for good. SXU would take a 29-8 run into the locker rooms for a 51-32 half time lead.
That was as close as the Tigers would get, as the Cougars took good care of the ball and only committed 5 turnovers in the second half, compared to the Tigers' 19. Shooting was also a factor as ONU only shot 9-35 from behind the arc.
In the second half, Saint Xavier pushed the lead to as many as 38, 108-70, as they finished with 110 points, the third most points given up by the Tigers this season.
Poppy Miller (New Haven, Ind.) led the way for the Tigers, scoring 16 points, including going 6-7 from the charity stripe. Foston put up 14 points and Holly Wiersema (Rockford, Ill.) scored 12 points and had six boards.
Brooke Peterson (Arlington Heights, Ill.) grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end, leading the Tigers to a 46-45 advantage on the glass.
The loss snapped the Tigers’ 3-game winning streak, as they slipped to 13-8 overall and 2-2 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. They return to action on Feb. 3, as they host the University of St. Francis at 5:30 p.m.
