Sharp-shooter inducted into Olivet Nazarene Athletics Hall of Fame
Former men’s basketball sharp-shooter Lee Coomler was among six inducted into the Olivet Nazarene University Department of Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, November 6, 2009.
Coomler was a member of the men’s basketball team from 1998-2000. During Coomler’s career, the Tiger men’s basketball team earned its only trip to the NAIA National Tournament “Final Four” in 2000. Coomler also started on the 1998 and 1999 National Tournament “Sweet 16” teams.
Coomler was selected as team MVP in 2000, CCAC All-Conference in 1998, 1999, and 2000, and CCAC Player of the Year in 2000. Also, in 2000 he was selected as a NAIA Second Team All-American. He also finished his career with an overall record of 86-27 (.761).
During his career, Coomler finished in the top 20 on six ONU all-time lists; fifth in scoring with 1,913 points, sixth on the field goals made list with 666, fourth on the field goals attempted list with 1,402, sixth on the free-throws made list with 362, eleventh on the free-throws attempted list with 424, and second in three-pointers made with 219.
Currently, Lee is a Vice President for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Hamilton County, Indiana.
Coomler joined five other former Olivet athletes as 2009 Hall of Fame honorees. Rainer Caldwell (football, 1990-1993), Steve Hassell (football, 1987-1990), Drew Neal (men’s basketball, 1997-2000), Matt Schweitzer (baseball, 1997-2000), and Shanda Spurlock (track and field, 1998-1999).
The six inductees bring the total number of inductees into Olivet’s Hall of Fame to 79. The first class was in 1982, when the University inducted former director of athletics and coach C.W. “Butch” Ward.
