The Tiger Men's Basketball program and Ralph Hodge welcome Torey Laferney from Davison, Mich to their '09 recruiting class. Torey is a 6'0" 165 lbs. quick, lights-out shooting, point guard who prepped at Goodrich High School in Goodrich, Mich. Laferney helps solidify the 2009 class from the point guard position and will help as a scorer from that position.
Laferney's career was highlighted by his Michigan All-State Honorable Mention selection as a senior. Torey also help lead his team to a an overall 18-3 record, an undefeated GAC Red Conference championship season, and a #8 state ranking. He averaged 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals per game, and shot over 40% from the three point line as a senior (Torey also made 8 of 9 three point attempts against Flint Powers HS). Following his senior campaign, Torey was named First Team All-GAC Red Conference and was named Academic All-State. Laferney also spent the last two summers as a member of the Mid-Michigan Lakers AAU basketball team.
Besides a great basketball career, Torey excelled as a cornerback on the Goodrich football team. He started for the #2 state ranked Martians who finished the season 10-1. He also starts as the Shortstop on the #6 state ranked baseball team.
Laferney will be expected to play the point-guard position and handle the ball with care and efficiency. Torey has the ability and readiness to put the ball on the "deck" and penetrate into the defense and find the open man and get teammates open with vision in transition. However, his most valuable ability, which is most obvious, is his flat-out gift of shooting the basketball, whenever the shot is available; which as a point-guard makes him tough to handle in the back court in the Hodge's system.
