CHICAGO, Ill. - The Olivet Nazarene University women's soccer team extended their season this morning as they defeated Illinois Institute of Technology 1-0 in the opening round of the CCAC tournament.
In what was expected to be a 1:00 p.m. start on Olivet's home field, turned into a 10:30 a.m. start on Saint Xavier University's field due to poor field conditions in Bourbonnais. The Tigers adapted well as they were able to control the game offensively to produce a win.
Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities in the contest, but ONU was able to connect on a breakaway at the 76:28 mark to put the Tigers ahead. Michelle Davis (Bourbonnais, Ill.) gained control of the ball on the left sideline and was able to use her speed to outrun the Scarlet Hawk defenders. Davis then cut to the middle to create a one-on-one match-up with IIT keeper Amy Arnhart (Springboro, Ohio). A quick fake to the left got Arnhart off balance which allowed Davis to put the ball in the back of the net for her team leading 12th goal of the season.
IIT was able to put up a total of nine shots on the morning with six being on goal, allowing ONU keeper Danielle Johnston (Bloomingdale, Ill.) to record six saves. IIT's Arnhard registered seven total saves in the game.
With the win, the Tigers (16-2-1) move on to the semi final game which is scheduled to take place next Saturday, Nov. 7, at Olivet Nazarene University. Gametime and opponent are yet to be announced.
