Dr. Armstrong is in his third year as Chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science and Associate Athletic Director, and his thirty-first year overall in higher education. Dr. Armstrong’s college experience began at Malone University (OH), where he served twenty years. While at Malone, Armstrong had a variety of responsibilities over the years, including Director of Admissions, Sports Information Director, Chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education, and Head Women’s Cross Country and Track Coach. His cross country teams won five NAIA District 22 titles and three NCCAA National titles. Three of his cross country runners earned NAIA All-American status, with one finishing NAIA National Runner-Up. Armstrong’s track teams won three NAIA District 22 titles and three NCCAA National titles. Eight of his track athletes earned NAIA All-American status, including one NAIA Indoor National Champion.


Following his stint at Malone, Dr. Armstrong accepted the position of Athletic Director and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology at Northwest Nazarene University (ID). While at NNU, Armstrong served as Tournament Director of the NAIA Division II National Men’s Basketball Championships, held in Nampa. He also guided the University’s transition from membership in the NAIA to NCAA Division II.


Prior to arriving at ONU, Armstrong served as Chair of the Division of Health and Physical Education at Baldwin-Wallace College, in Berea, OH.


Dr. Armstrong received a B.A. in Biblical Literature from Malone University (OH), a M.Ed. in Sports Science from Ashland University (OH), and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Kent State University (OH).


During his days as a track athlete, Armstrong set Malone records in the long jump and triple jump, and was a member of a record-setting 4x100 yard relay. He set the NAIA District 22 standard in the long jump, which lasted twenty years. He was a finalist in the long jump in the 1973 NAIA National Championships, finishing seventh. Armstrong was inducted into the Malone University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.


Armstrong is married to Dr. Susan (Welch) Armstrong, who serves as Worship Pastor at Manteno Church of the Nazarene. Their son, Brendon, and his wife, Aleah, live and work in Columbus, Ohio.
