Dr. Hathaway joined the mathematics department in 1989. He has taught a variety of mathematics courses including statistics, probability, linear algebra, discrete, finite, and liberal arts mathematics as well as calculus. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Hathaway has been active in research with nearly a dozen publications including the textbook that is used for Olivet’s mathematics for the liberal arts course. He is currently working on a book on the birthday problem.
Dr. Hathaway has also given over half a dozen professional talks, most at national meetings of the Mathematical Association of America. He has also served for many years as a table leader for AP calculus.
His recent involvement with students has included supervising five student’s summer research experiences. Dr. Hathaway is also the organizer of the newly formed Math club, which gives students and faculty a chance to get together for some food and play around with some fun mathematics.
Because of his positive involvement with students, Dr. Hathaway received the Second Mile Award in 2004, a student nominated award.
When not involved with mathematics he can be found with his wife and three children, riding his bike or organizing his 1400-piece puzzle collection.
